GoBox

Overview:
GoBox is a modular, linear meal kit & mobile app specially designed to help young adults on the autism spectrum feel more independent and empowered in the kitchen.

The Problem:
The multitasking, complex chained tasks, and moments of sensory overload involved in the cooking process can build up to make preparing a homecooked dish feel like a daunting, oftentimes insurmountable chore for those with ASD. With many on the spectrum relying on the convenience of frozen/prepared foods or the help of a family member, the ability to cook a warm, nutritious meal for oneself plays such a pivotal role in feeling confident and independent when transitioning into adulthood. We aim to help by streamlining an overwhelming process with a sensory-friendly, intuitive, and adaptable workflow in the kitchen.

User: Designed and tested with18-25 year olds on the autism spectrum, GoBox was also later found to benefit others ranging from those with cognitive dissabilites such as ADHD and ADD, to elderly users, to those newer to cooking and looking for a quick nutritious meal.

Team: I worked alongside 3 other IPD students, partnering with the Kinney Center's Aspire Program, an immersive program which offers support to college students with ASD in order to best prepare them for transitioning into adulthood.

Tools: User research, co-designing, rapid prototyping, Figma, Adobe Illustrator, AB testing, conjoint analysis

Cooking on the spectrum

Hannah lives with her bofyfriend and relies on him to prepare their meals. She enjoys cooking but struggles finding the motivation to begin the process.

Jonah used to live with his partner, and they would frequently cook together. Since living on his own he finds it challenging to plan ahead for meals.

"I need to convince myself to take time and think about the ingredients, find missing tools in the kitchen... sometimes I get fatigued before even starting"

"My partner used to do the food shopping but it just requires more planning than I'm capable of"

Laura recently graduated from college and doesn't feel comfortable chopping ingredients in the kitchen, relying on microwavable meals for most dishes.

"I don't like how it feels or smells to handle raw meat. I'm also intimidated by the stove and the oven"

What does cooking look like now?

Who we spoke to

How might we make cooking for one more accessible for young adults on the autism spectrum in order to increase independence?

How did we get here?

Key insights

1) Cooking is not a linear process

IMG-6116.jpg
  • Upfront organization unravels quickly

  • Not all ingredients divide equally

  • Recipe steps vary in size and complexity

Copy of IMG_7585 (1).HEIC
  • Lots of inactive downtime

  • Impossible to eliminate multitasking entirely

2) Seeing the right ingredient at the right time

DSC03599 (3).jpg
  • Unboxing sets the tine for the experience

  • Labeling adds reassurance

IMG-6321.jpg
  • Difficult to gauge how far you've come and how much there is left to do

3) Linking the recipe to the act of cooking

IMG_9766 (1).HEIC
  • Unsure if the current task is done

  • Losing your place shifting back and forth

  • Worried about what comes next

IMG_7284 (1).HEIC
  • Lack of explicit instructions diminishes trust

  • Desire to always have references on hand
